St. Ann’s Community to Hold Walk in Support of Alzheimer’s Association’s “Longest Day” Event

The Longest Day logoResidents and staff of St. Ann’s Community will participate in a “Walk to Remember” on its Irondequoit campus to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. The walk is being held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association’s “The Longest Day” event and the observance of June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month in New York State.

The walk will take place Thursday, June 21st beginning at 1:30 PM at St. Ann’s, 1500 Portland Avenue. Staff and volunteers will be paired with residents who wish to participate in the short walk around campus. Participants will get to enjoy refreshments and contribute to a community art piece at the conclusion of the walk.

The Longest Day is an event created by the Alzheimer’s Association which coincides with the day of the summer solstice every year. It is done in honor of those who are battling Alzheimer’s disease and helps to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association.

June was officially recognized as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month in New York State this past week. The proclamation by Gov. Andrew Cuomo draws attention to Alzheimer’s disease and how it impacts many New York residents.

St. Ann’s Community serves seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia at two locations: Rainier Grove at Cherry Ridge in Webster and the Special Care Unit at St. Ann’s Home in Irondequoit. Both provide specialized care designed to reduce residents’ anxiety, maintain their dignity, and support socialization and engagement.
